The teams in the new office named “IAS14” will develop innovations across several areas like product safety, compliance, cloud computing, machine learning, and information security.

On April 25th, we opened the doors of our newest corporate office in Ia?i, Romania. The new office, located in the Palas Campus, has a capacity for over 2,000 people, and consolidates our presence in the Eastern part of the country.

Considered the cultural capital of Romania, Ia?i has been the location for our Development Centre in the country since 2005, and it was our first R&D site in Eastern Europe.

Our technology teams have been leading our innovation efforts across a broad range of areas, including; product safety, compliance, cloud computing, machine learning, and information security. These are highly skilled technology roles, which have contributed to the city’s burgeoning technology industry.

“Ia?i has long been a center for tech talent and academic excellence, and our teams here develop cutting-edge technology for our online stores around the world. We’ve been investing in Romania for nearly 20 years, and this is another major milestone for Amazon’s commitment to the country.” Said Cristian Josan, General Manager of Amazon Development Center Romania in Ia?i.

The opening of the new office was attended by Prime Minister of Romania, Nicolae-Ionel Ciuc?, U.S. Ambassador to Romania, Her Excellency Kathleen Ann Kavalec, Ambassador of Romania to the United States of America, His Excellency Andrei Muraru, and other ministers from the Romanian Government, along with the local administration representatives.

“We are pleased that the teams of Amazon Development Center from Iasi are now reunited under one roof at Palas Campus. This new corporate office confirms our country’s position as an attractive place to invest, powered by a high volume of talented people. Almost 20 years have passed by since the opening of Amazon’s first research and development center in Eastern Europe, and we are proud to continue positioning Romania as a European center of innovation and for Iasi to be a reference for the tech industry.” Words by Nicolae Ionel Ciuc?, Prime Minister of Romania.

With over 4,500 sqm of green spaces and promenade areas, Amazon employees will enjoy outdoor co-working spaces, restaurants, coffee shops, terraces, a supermarket, a gym, a medical hub, and a service area. The Amazon office also includes design elements rooted both in the Amazon and local culture and has almost 200of pieces of art-work originating from local artists.

Amazon’s presence in Romania

Since opening our first office in Romania in 2005, we have expanded to over 4,000 employees across three cities: Ia?i, Bucharest and Timi?oara. Our office from Timisoara accommodates the Product Safety and Compliance and Ring teams.

Our development center in Bucharest first opened in 2017, and is home to Speech and Language Solutions for Alexa, Alexa Product Testing, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) teams working on key technologies for the Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2) service.

We are aware of our social responsibility as a company, especially in the local communities where our employees live and work.

Our main charitable partner in Romania is Fundatia Comunitaria Iasi, with whom we have partnered since 2014 to support local community projects, focused especially on education and environmental issues.

In partnership with Fundatia Comunitaria Iasi, we have also provided humanitarian relief to Ukrainian refugees. So far, Amazon has donated over $1.3 million to Romanian and Moldovan charities supporting war relief efforts. We also continue to make product donations—from hygiene products and medical supplies to snacks and clothing.

We’re happy to continue expanding our presence in the country and to have secured a new home in Iasi, which was our first technology hub in Eastern Europe. The new office in Palas Campus mirrors our constant improvement to make every day better for our employees, customers, and partners.
