New York, July 20, 2021 – American Express Company (NYSE: AXP) and Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank and the third largest merchant acquirer in the world, are expanding their business partnership, significantly increasing the number of places where American Express cardholders can pay with their cards  across Russia and online.

In addition, American Express clients will be able to withdraw rubles using Sber ATMs. The number of merchant locations and ATMs accepting American Express will be growing throughout 2021 and 2022.

“We are expanding the network that accepts American Express Cards at Sberbank clients’ points of sale,” said Kirill Tsaryov, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board, Sberbank. “Having completed the first stage of integration, we will be growing American Express Card acceptance throughout Russia step by step, gradually increasing the number of outlets and ATMs. Cardholders will be able to pay for purchases in more stores, including online. Our merchant acquiring clients will be able to increase sales. We will continue to work together to provide more payment options to corporate customers of Sberbank and American Express cardholders.”

“We are happy to expand our partnership with Sberbank, the world’s third largest merchant acquirer, to improve American Express representation in Russia,” said Mohammed Badi, President, Global Network Services, American Express. “This partnership enables our cardholders to use their cards for everyday shopping and when traveling in Russia, both as tourists and for business. Sberbank and American Express will continue to work in close collaboration to roll out more acceptance locations over the coming years.”

American Express added more than 3.7 million merchant locations internationally in 2020. The partnership with Sberbank is the latest effort to expand card acceptance globally and ensure American Express cards are warmly welcomed by businesses around the world.
